I am a saleswoman!
Today it dawned on me that I am a saleswoman. Yep, that’s right. I. sell. And why is this ground-breaking info, you might ask? Because I have denied this simple truth about myself for years. You know the bad rep that salespeople get…the pushy, annoying, relentless, slimy, sleazy salesman in the suit, with stank cologne, trying to sell you a lemon…and telling you it’s your dream car. Yep, you know him (or her) who makes promises they can’t keep, selling false hope….and for a discount, because they, “….don’t normally do this but for you, I will. Today is your lucky day!”
I get it. It’s annoying but most of all, it’s dishonest.
My husband is an honest salesman so he dispelled that myth of the slimy salesman (btw, he does have a nice salesman smile but no stank cologne). Our home is full of books on sales….it’s really not about the product…it’s about influence, personality, and having a product that you believe in.
I reflected about my old neighbor Greg, and the many lessons he taught me about life. I grew up in a predominately black neighborhood and Greg was my white, next door neighbor. He was also the first professor I’d ever met. He gave me my first computer and tutored me on occasion. Greg was smart and although we were so different demographically, I felt and still feel connected to him. I can go on and on about Greg but he was my best customer.
He lived right next door so when I was making my door-to-door sales pitches to sale Girl-Scout cookies or World’s Finest chocolate for a school fundraiser, Greg would always buy from me. Around age 5, I remember him telling me I was a good saleswoman. I now know what he meant…..
When Greg was about to move from his row house into a smaller apartment, I was sad to see him go. I was about to go to college at this point so I knew Greg for many many years. He approached me and said, “I have to move and I can’t take this stuff. You are a saleswoman. I want you to sell it and you can keep the profits to help you with your college expenses.” Say what? And Greg had nice stuff of course too so I said, “Yes.” I set up my shop in front of his house and by the end of the day, all of his stuff was SOLD. I can’t remember how much money I made but I remember feeling so proud!
The seed was planted……………
Here I am in my mid-30s and I’m a writer, full-time. I sell my ideas, my words, my organization skills, my planning skills, my tech skills. I sale 16 years of professional experience, 2 Masters, a Ph.D., 6 years of professorship, and countless tutorials that I took to learn all about digital marketing. I sell all of this, in one neat package, because you don’t have time to spend 16years in a cube, while in school full-time, then teaching part-time. I sell it to you because I know it will help make your life easier…and do something that you love, while I’m also doing something that I love…that’s a win/win!
I’m confident in what I sell because I am real. I am honest. No cheap cologne, no lemons, no fillers. I offer you expertise, superb customer service, and my time to save you time. I let you pick my brain, use my words to grow your biz, and my digital marketing experience to save you money, in the long run.
Should this be free? No. All good investments cost money. You know what they say, “You get what you pay for.” And, you are more likely to take it seriously if you pay.
I must warn, though—I am not for everyone. I’m thorough, detailed-oriented, and I deliver quality (ok ok I am a perfectionist but that actually serves you well). I don’t take short-cuts. I care about my service to you so I take my time and get the job done right. I don’t cut corners and I ask questions. If you are more interested in quantity versus quality, you may find my questions, timelines, written procedures, etc. annoying. And I get that. But, I can promise you that this is who I am…and I’m not faking it. I’ve always been this way….ask around……
When you ask around, you may also hear that I am a yogi…that is true! I love yoga. I teach yoga. A friend was trying to recruit me to sell It Works products and I told her, “I can’t. I’m just not a saleswoman.” She fired back, “it’s no different than you telling all of your friends how much yoga changed your life and telling them they should try it!” I responded, “Well that’s true! I do believe yoga changed my life! I can’t say the same for It Works.”
I will sell yoga with confidence and clarity because I KNOW it has changed my life. I am now selling my words and digital marketing because I KNOW my product. My product is not a diet pill or protein shake. It’s me and I know me and what I am capable of 100%. Try me….I just may change your biz…or change your life!
